I don't really understand the point of this extremely sad "lost episodes" comics trend, what's the appeal of doing that?

It's a cheap excuse for people who want to look "deep" to churn out offensive or disturbing fan stories of a particular story.

I'm guessing it started out as a creepypasta that got popular and spawned too many knockoffs.

yeah, that's what it looks like to me too... Maybe there is also an anti-joke factor going on, but they mostly just seem like they're trying to sound cynic just for the sake of it, I dunno :/

sometimes, this "lost episodes" stuff is quite fun. Like creepypastes and city legends.
