Re: News
Germany is going completely crazy... This is going to be a wall of text, a long, clunkily written vent post, but maybe you'd like to read it if you wanna know what the refugee crisis looks like from here.
In 2013/2014, lots of asylum seekers came to europe, and most of them took cover from current civil wars in countries like Syria. This year, they became so numerous that the registration processes became much more lax/ partially nonexistent. You can't tell how many of them are actual war refugees and how many of them are economic migrants, as syrian passports are easily obtainable and it's impossible to do closer research on each one of them.
Around July/August, hell broke completely loose here when our chancellor Angela Merkel did several things that represent an invitiationto come to germany. For example, she held speeches in which she assured the right of residence to war refugees (which was a solo action; the initial plan was that they only stay here as long as their homecountries are uninhabitable), took nice selfies with some of the immigrants, etc. All those speeches and photos reached numerous eastern countries and, of course, aroused completely unrealistic expecations of life in Germany.
The outcome: A neverending stream of people marches in. As of now, we've reached 10.000 immigrants per day!!! (i could type so many exclamation marks here!!). The displacement camps are hopelessly crowded, most of the helpers are only working on a voluntary basis and basically have to feed those thousands of people out of their own pockets. There are cases of expropriation now, where empty flats have to be given to the immigrants, and a few times, lodgers got suddenly evicted because the living space was needed.
Most of the immigrants expected a glorious, easy life here -partially due to Merkel's great work (I'm happy this bitch didn't get the Nobel prize she wanted so badly). That's why they're getting more and more dissatisfied with having to stay in soggy, cold and crowded tents. Hunger strikes and suicide threats everywhere. In Slovenia, some torched their accomodations as a protest. Today, 700 immigrants fled from a camp, no one knows where they are gone, all of them are unregistered.
Another problem, of course, is that there are going to be salafists/ terrorists among this uncontrolled flow of immigrants. Some of them already were held by the police- makes one think about how many weren't. Smuggling weapons and keeping a low profile has never been easier.

Furthermore, democracy is KO here. Two or three months ago, whenever someone raised an objection -in real life or on the internet-, he got instantly vilified as a Nazi. You couldn't say something like "we can't shelter half the world here just because the german/ european living standards are good". The media tried their best at leveraging common sense and creating an euphoria that derived from thoughts like "wow, we are so good and kind-hearted".
No one wanted to think about the realistic problems of such a mass-immigration. Newspapers and politicians were raving about how easy the integration would be and how many "qualified professionals" were going to be amongst the refugees, and how germany was going to profit from them (what a fucking fucked up logic! Help people so that you can fleece them later!). Celebrities jumped on the hype train and raged against those evil Nazi-zombies who realized how insane the thought of "germany as an Utopia for the needy" was. Fear of terrorism was and partly is regarded as Xenophobia.
Luckily, this is a little better now, as it got impossible to turn a blind eye to the problems. But it's really not over yet: Speeches that criticize the current asylum policy are presented as "right-wing extremist" in the media, authors get boycotted, etc. One of the very few parties that wants to stop this madness by closing the gates and verifying the immigrants we've already got, is discussed to be "anticonstituional" right now, even thought they explicitly distanced themselves from being right-wing or racist.
While in my view, the true criminals are those who attracted all those people just to have them live in unworthy circumstances (some refugees said in Interviews they would have been better off in Syria, and wouldn't understand why we keep inviting people when there is not enough place and work for them).

SO, why am I getting so worked up on this? Not only because the current circumstances, but also because germany's future, or even europe's (idk) looks dark right now. I never felt civil war and 1984 (regarding our media landscape, and if the government declares a state of emergency) being so close. I haven't discussed with anyone but my parents about this yet, as I'm afraid of losing even the few friends I have. Maybe everything is going to end well for germany/ europe as well as the immigrants, but the freedom of expression and political rationality is definitely restricted.
Sorry this got so incredibly long.

Re: News
I feel rather exceptic about Germany falling down.
No nation in the world have passed through many civil conflicts, wars, totalitarian governments, even a "Split-up", and has still its own place on the map.
I recognize that the problems of great, but is gonna stay like that, Though Germany is actualy an occidental country, it is actualy somewhere between the heterogenial Western world and the more homogenical Eastern world, which makes also harder any kind of asimilation between Germans and Syrians, even withouth any kind of actual discrimination. Hence the overcrowded camps.
I find this an example of "Edge/Rim Logic" (Going from one extreme to another, instead of finding the more balanced center), where they probably want to fix all the Genocide made by the Nazis by accepting many inmigrants as they can. (And this afixing someone as "Nazi" if implies any kind of opposition).
Also, they idea that the inmingrants have to seek for Germany, withouth an actual help and by their own survival...
...it sounds like the plot of some movie, and thinking about it is disturbing, they really sound like wild animals in a migration, where only the strongest made it and a few others die in the way (The younger they are, the more they "shake" the world).
I don't know about the infiltrated terrorist to much, but I don't want to imagine what they plans are...

Re: News
Hey, Roentgen, I totally understand!
We're getting quite a lot of refugees here in Finland, too.
And we are a very small country having an economical depression, we don't have the resources to handle this.
Also, the refugees are not prepared to the living conditions we have here (mainly the cold weather but also the culture and customs), so there are bound to be some issues.
Racists people are complaining about this and some have even been attacking the shelters, terrorising the refugees

Re: News
If Donald Trump wins this upcoming US election, the world will be getting a lot more "refugees" soon
(I am aware that this definition should not be comparable to actual refugees)

Re: News
Eh, interesting. I'm doing a speech at school to raise awareness of the crisis, since it seems that most of my classmates (tell me guys, how often do I rant about my peers? :s) don't have a blimmin' clue as to what is happening in the E.U. and the Middle East at the moment.
I'm also failing to find a point to argue. It can be an informative speech, but it wouldn't be very effective if I were to declare, "You guys know nothing about the Refugee Crisis and how it sucks for everybody, and I don't know what to believe! Yay!"
...the truth is, there is no one single solution.
@Roentgen: Do you know what percentage of migrants that enter the E.U. are not covered by the Dublin Regulation? I can't find the numbers
@Isobel: Is there a movement similar to PEGIDA in Finland?
@Jatsko: Hey, if Donald Trump wins the upcoming election, then the world will be getting a lot more than just "more refugees", sadly. Basically, I wouldn't trust the guy with the nuke codes, eheh.
Anyway, is it OK if we discuss the crisis a little more? Your opinions could really help me out in my topic---which I'm meant to be writing right now, so byeeee.

Re: News
I only found this chart from june on the german wikipedia entry: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... A4nder.pngBoingo wrote: @Roentgen: Do you know what percentage of migrants that enter the E.U. are not covered by the Dublin Regulation? I can't find the numbers

It says: "Refugee crisis europe 2015. Number of refugees betweem january and june 2015, sorted by destination and country of origin". "Sonstige Herkunftsländer"="other countries of origin". AT= Austria, DE= germany, HU= Hungary
I don't exactly know who is covered by Dublin reg.
Be careful when reporting on Pegida, they're kind of a double-edged sword imo. On the one hand, they're part of the opposition that democracy needs for pertinent problem solving, but on the other hand, there's a lot of racist scum among them and their preferntial strategy seems to be "shouting paroles together so that they sound relevant".
