I think the word Indian refers to only Natives of the United States most of the time, actually.

"Indians" is (at list in Poland as "Indianie") word refering to all native inhabitants of both Americas. Word was created and used by the first european travelers who found South America after all.

What do you call people from India then? I don't think there is a distinction in English.

EDIT: And it totally refers to all American Indians, not just the United States ones. People just know the names of the ones in the South America.

In Spanish we call people from India "hindús" or "hindis", and native people from America "indios". Don't know in English. And we also refer to people from all America.

We call people from India "Hindusi", but many children thinks that right word for them is "Indianie". One big mess.
