I think the word Indian refers to only Natives of the United States most of the time, actually.

"Indians" is (at list in Poland as "Indianie") word refering to all native inhabitants of both Americas. Word was created and used by the first european travelers who found South America after all.

In Spanish we call people from India "hindús" or "hindis", and native people from America "indios". Don't know in English. We call people from India "Hindusi", but many children thinks that right word for them is "Indianie". One big mess.
