@Iso: Congrats on being a godmother! How'd you get that honor?
The cousin asked us if we would like to be the godparents, and we said yes.

Oh, that was easy :P Really nice of them too.

@Rooster:
Usually the parents ask relatives and good friends to be godparents. It's a nice way to stay in touch.
Also, we are really not "godparents" in a religious sense, because the kid is not baptised.
Does godparenthood work differently where you live?

Here, godparent...hood I guess (?) is a strictly religious thing. And you have to be a Catholic (that has gotten Confirmation) to be a godparent of a kid.

@Vurn:
Officially the godparent has to be a member of the church here, too. Religious education is the godparent's job, after all.

But like I said earlier, in this case there is no religion involved. Having godparents is more of a habit or a tradition over here, just like having your kid baptised or getting married in a church. People do it because everybody else does it and/or they think it's a nice tradition.

Godparents here are basically those who take care of the children if both parents die. Not necessarily religious.

Yeah, that's basically how I find Godparent-hood, I was just interested about her bf's cousin and her being chosen. I've heard of best friends and siblings being chosen, but I guess his cousins must be pretty close to him for them to choose him as their child's Godfather.

@Sub: Well, congrats! Which two?

I think over here godparents have no legal rights or obligations to the kid. They can't claim the kid as their own if the parents die, nor do they have to take the kid if they can't take care of him/her.
At least they are taken into consideration when the social services are looking for a proper new home for the kid.
