1) I think it means the former.
2) Nothing that I can think of. Maybe that's why it's "falsely".

So, any thoughts on this? What is it?
Personally I think it serves like a benchmark of sorts for the Knot. Like saying "Hey, you've reached the knot. Congrats."

I think the same. The rays that emanate from it could partly be from people having touched it as a religious icon.

The same sign appears right in the first screen of the game,in the garden. And in the center it has the circle we used to open the gate in layer 5. Yep,it's really a "You've reached the knot" sign and in the bottom of the temple it could be a "Here you leave the knot" sign.

Yeah, that makes sense.

In order to figure out who the "unknown goddess" is (below), I've made an account on hindudharmaforums.com in the hopes that someone there might recognize her. But, since I'm a new user, my post has been screened, and since the forum seems to be pretty inactive, I don't expect a response anytime soon :/

I couldn't find the exact posture, but I found a statue that is at least pretty similar looking. The body is upright yet slightly shifted to its side, the right arm raised overhead, the left arm folded
(though not over her chest), and her legs posed in similar position
(yet twisted over each other unlike the game's counterpart).
Mateusz might have saw other similar statues like this and drew his own based on them.

hmm...
I feel there's absolutely similar real-life statue somewhere...
(btw, what does she hold in arms? When I saw it at first time, I though it's Sub3's navigator.
