I actually think that the hole is part of the drainage system of the temple, and the "chain" is actually murky water or sand flowing out.

I think it's part of the mechanism, that's supposed to lower the cage thing.

I have only two thoughts:

1) it WAS part of elevator system (how did they descend down?)
2) it is part of mechanism 10 screens above O_o (well, there's blue karmic thing, maybe the chain teleports on 10 levels down?..)

Now that I'm looking at a layout of the temple, I'm starting to get really frustrated with how asymmetrical the bottom level is.

Oh, right right. For a moment I thought y'all were talking about the climbing rope (duh)

That seems to be the best explanation, but there's no way the chain remains intact all the way down...
