go up the stairs, and with all your strength throw the metal box down the hatch
Mr. Stick goes up and throws metal box WITH ALL HIS MANLY STRENGHT!
Then Steve goes down and examines box...
...
It hasn't any tiny scratch.
Also, while you're up there, turn off the lights to see if there are invisible writings in the new paper.
Mr. Stick quickly turns off the lights and checks the paper.
No invisible writings on it. He turns on lights again.

Thoughts:
Possibility #1:
Reexamine the opening next to the door.
When you do so also examine the little black square on the side of it.
Possibility #2:
Is there anything below or behind the chest?
Possibility #3:
Attempt the same procedure followed by the lab group sent to the ship to open the hatch.
If you don' survive...
leave a note

<As I wrote before, I will not view old repeating commands.>
Attempt the same procedure followed by the lab group sent to the ship to open the hatch.
If you don' survive...
leave a note
First: Steve hasn't lab equipment to make the bomb.
Second:
HE IS NOT GOING TO DIE HERE.
And third: he hasn't pencil to write the note! :P
Reexamine the opening next to the door
Mr. Steve goes to upper room and examines familiar cache again.

How about hitting the lock off the door using the force of the metal box?
