You may be stating the obvious.
But I get your point, I do believe they are powered by Wisdom Gems.
You can't exactly tell when its probably inside the portal machine.

They can be powered with any situable power source, Wisdom gems included.

It doesn't negate the fact that one could still be inside, this just popped into my head when looking 992, see how the lights are using the portal?

Also, what would you call a suitable power source? As the only one seems to be wisdom gems.
The goal of Sub 5 was to go get 3 of them to power the mover.

Well, there's that generator in Sub5, but I doubt it can be used to power a portal.
