Just a though, what if it's the other way round? What if the culture, architecture, and religion from the occupants of the Submachine, the fourth dynasty etc, seeped out onto earth, in small pockets, influencing different cultures across the world?
It could make for an interesting theory, the Submachine was a created structure in the modern era, but its inhabitants through the use of time machines influenced the early development of the ancient civilizations of the Earth.
The problem, I think, is that we haven't seen how the Submachine's "real world" is, it even might have been completely absorbed into the Subnet.

The people of the past thus inspired, they build up society as we know it, and people fall into the world of Submachine, use time travel, and restart it all.
Creating a stable time loop.
Not a bad theory...

:O
If so... This is WHY I want to return everything to normal state in the end of our journey, if "escaping from submachine" won't work because THERE ISN'T PLACE TO WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE.
But wait... Last secret of Sub9...
"
If you want to leave the structure"
What structure?

I don't know, that's why I said "might"
if there's still a small reduct of real world out there, the word "exit" can make sense.
btw, about this note:
- How is it possible, that people are still coming through the loop and trying to turn off the defense systems? After all these years...
- What would you have me do. Destroy his creation? Destroy the whole section?
- I don't know... Maybe...
- You're talking about destroying our history. What next, book burning?
- No, of course not. But maybe... A sign? That it's no longer necessary to shut down the defenses?
- And what about those in the eighth layer?
- I stand corrected...
that means that many of our predecessors were still trying and failing to shut down the DefSys when it was no longer necessary, right? It talks about "destroying history" so that means Murtaugh must have died at that time. Then, if we are the first person to succeed in shutting it down... who were we talking to at the end of Sub6? It said it came from mur@lab, but he was dead... does it mean it's an impostor?
Also, the last part... the DefSys was preventing people from escaping from the eighth layer, or what? o_o

I always assumed that maybe meant the Temple. I mean, it's not exactly a building, not exactly a set of tunnels, not exactly a pyramid. It's a mix of a lot of different structures, so it makes sense just to call it the structure.
Or maybe, the structure is referring to the machine...

Maybe it means they're in the eight layer, so it they won't see whatever sign it is they create? Anyway, without shutting down the DefSys, there's no way out of Mur's section, right? It doesn't seem to link to the rest of the subnet.
EDIT: Maybe it was just a computer program that we talked to?

yeah, that's what I thought, it explains why so many people died or suicided in Sub6 (they were stuck at that part forever) and why Murtaugh repented later when he saw he had led so many people to their death. But I can't see then how Murtaugh managed to send that message if we were the first, either it's a prerecorded message or it's an impostor.

questions, questions, questions...
I don't understand: what section? Who created this creation? What history/books? Who/what are "those"? who were we talking to at the end of Sub6?
And WHO THE HELL THIS TWO GUYS? How one of them can destroy the whole structure?
Or maybe, the structure is referring to the machine...
that is the point of my question. I just want to say I think it refers to machine itself. :)

It could be. If the corrupted outer rim's AI grew sentient, it may very well want to use us for its purposes.
