First of all, the Ulitmate Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything is "42".
But they did not ask the question that goes with 42.

The question was:

What do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?

So combining both the Ultimate Question with the Ultimate Answer you get:

6x9=42

Now, forget that 6 times 9 equals 54. 54 is has no relation to the answer.
Where is the 6 and the 9 in relation to the mathematical multiplication of the number 7?

6x7=42
7x7=49

So in other words, if life in its long and glorious existences was perfect, the answer would be:

"49", not "42".

But since life is not perfect, the answer can only be "42".
