True, but of course folk stories must abide by the "Rule of Three" (at least in 'Murica)

So, I'm thinking of replacing my current avatar with a gif of the same image (but the ball/light orb/"Lumi"/whatever is pulsating and turning). I talked to my friends and they said in order to record it, since it comes from a Steam game it would be best to use FRAPs for video recording.

Should I use FRAPs? Or is there a better alternative?

Try using GifCam

You know if it's been used on Steam games before?

If it's not in fullscreen, should work. It's not a recording software, it's more of a snipping tool.
