I kinda think the same now. Actually, when I saw the sub9 teaser, I realised I missed something from the early games. Don't know if it is the absence of technology (early game relied more in contraptions and such), or all the open spaces (before Sub4 we never saw any), or the karma portals, beamers, etc. (until Sub5-Sub6 everything was more realistic, but blue and green energy things floating in the air makes it a bit less credible. Not that I don't love it, it's one of the things I like the most, but they kinda "broke" the atmosphere of mystery), or even the complexity (the beautiful and detailed structures of recent games are incredible, but they make me comfortable, not scared).
Don't take me wrong, I really like the direction the game is taking, but I feel like the late games' atmosphere is not connected to the early games, it feels to me almost like if they were two different series; if I knew nothing about the series and was shown Sub2 and Sub8 together, for example, I think I could find little connection in terms of ambient. I was perhaps hoping that Sub9 would have something that helped it connect to the early games (like Sub5's Lighthouse revisit) to give a sense of closure, but it looks like it will be more like Sub8 and Sub7. It's possible that I'm wrong, and the game will have elements that remind of the first games, and it would make me happy. But I'll be happy either way
