Submachine 2: the Lighthouse
Re: Submachine 2: the Lighthouse
I kinda think the same now. Actually, when I saw the sub9 teaser, I realised I missed something from the early games. Don't know if it is the absence of technology (early game relied more in contraptions and such), or all the open spaces (before Sub4 we never saw any), or the karma portals, beamers, etc. (until Sub5-Sub6 everything was more realistic, but blue and green energy things floating in the air makes it a bit less credible. Not that I don't love it, it's one of the things I like the most, but they kinda "broke" the atmosphere of mystery), or even the complexity (the beautiful and detailed structures of recent games are incredible, but they make me comfortable, not scared).
Don't take me wrong, I really like the direction the game is taking, but I feel like the late games' atmosphere is not connected to the early games, it feels to me almost like if they were two different series; if I knew nothing about the series and was shown Sub2 and Sub8 together, for example, I think I could find little connection in terms of ambient. I was perhaps hoping that Sub9 would have something that helped it connect to the early games (like Sub5's Lighthouse revisit) to give a sense of closure, but it looks like it will be more like Sub8 and Sub7. It's possible that I'm wrong, and the game will have elements that remind of the first games, and it would make me happy. But I'll be happy either way

Re: Submachine 2: the Lighthouse
For me, the series at now can be divided in three parts: Sub1-3, Sub4-6, Sub7-9, Exposition+increase, extension, metamorphosis+culmination . Sub10 would be resolution.
Yeah, these parts are VERY different. As if you play different games. Three different worlds, three different atmospheres, three different knowledges. That is why I always talk that first games are really scary, but late games aren't.
First games are scary and mystery. Second group of Subs are mystery and stressful. Core and Plan (and Temple, as I see on screenshot) are like wonderful adventure and observing all wonders and beauties of Submachine Universe.
In first games you are stranger, alien of SubUniverse, and you felt fear and anxiety. Later you became visitor, and later - traveler and explorer. Now you are true inhabitant of this world, and you feel only reverence and admiration of your new home. No traces of former despair and fear.
I started to play Submachine because of its great atmosphere I didn't see in other games. Now that old atmosphere evolved into something new, and this "new" is also beautiful, but totally different at the same time.
...
Well, I think Sub9 will take place only in Temple, it will be like Core and Plan. But I want to see in final part of this story connection of all elements/things that we saw in previous games (with old locations, if it is possible), and, especially, I want to feel old familiar atmosphere of fear, that I felt in first games.
Mateusz, if you read this, please, tell what do you think. :)

Re: Submachine 2: the Lighthouse
Yeah, I also would like that, if not in Sub9, maybe in Sub10. A connection that makes everything we have seen in the series "fit" together, as the one, grand, majestic series that is Submachine.Sublevel 102 wrote:Well, I think Sub9 will take place only in Temple, it will be like Core and Plan. But if Mateusz has everything planned already, and most likely he has, I'll certainly be fine with whatever the plan turns out to be
Re: Submachine 2: the Lighthouse
I don't know about you guys, but my all time favourite location is The Radio Lab . A whole game like that would be amazing.
Although, the atmposhere of the fort in number 8 really was great, in my opinion, along with the storm drains.
EDIT: Also, the ship from Sub 4, and the Barracks at 777.

Re: Submachine 2: the Lighthouse
My opinions:
Sub0: I didn't feel that fear, maybe because the title actualy make my feeling that I'm was in an adventure.
Sub1: I don't feel any fear here, I'm just feel that I'm playing a game.
Sub2: I agree that Sub2 is creepy and scary than other Submachines.
Sub3: The game isn't scary for me, at least because of the music of the intro, which I found fun. However, the expretion "It just YOU, and the MACHINE" still impacts me everytime I read it.
Sub4: For me this is the least scariest Submachine of all. The Lab is like a home place, even if its abandoned, you also find more sings of life, and the void makes the places more open. Also, you visit places that resambles places from previous Submachines and there is that lucky room with that happy music. I find this game funny, but nothing scary.
Sub32: Okay, we don't have any idea of what this place is, but I had the same feeling of Sub0.
SubFLF: This Submachine is weird, but not scary.
Sub5: Those rusty root places can be creepy for someone, but at least not for my, because the root actualy looks like my basement.
Sub6: This Submachine actualy surprised me with all the technology a submachine can have.
Sub7: What Gemini said.
Sub8: For me this Submachine is the second more creepy after Sub2.
SubVerse: I think that since it has loot of content it can be variable, however, I see this Submachine a bit empty due the lack of interactivity and puzzles, however, Mateusz hopefully plans to had those. 472 is for me the most scariest location of all.
Sub9: This Submachine will make me remember a game I played long time ago.
After all, I actually don't care if Submachine haunts me, because I don't think is supossed to be like that. Submachine is that epic adventure of strange machines and characters, whose porpuse and story is revealed with the pass of the time as you play the series.

Re: Submachine 2: the Lighthouse
What? You wasn't scared when you arrived at abandoned Lab? When you read that there is 4 exploration teams, but you found NOONE, no traces, except some equipment and small dot of blood? And notes that gives you feelings of its authors who were trapped, their despair and fear?ENIHCAMBUS wrote:Sub4: For me this is the least scariest Submachine of all. You were supposed to find a life, a help, but you found only abandonment. You begin to understand that you are ALONE.
And you didn't think that you can suddenly disappear, as exploration teams before you?
That sounds strange for me...
Oh, nevermind. It seems we just have different views on such things. :)

Actually, loneliness in eight game isn't fearful at all.
Re: Submachine 2: the Lighthouse
I find both creepy in different ways, Sub 4 and Sub 2.
Sub 2, becuase it was so mysterious and huge, and as I already elaborated, it felt like we were not alone.
Sub 4, becuase I thought it really conveys a sense of claustraphobia. It's like at any minute the portal could break, and you end up like one of the teams. Insane. Alone. Buried Alive.

Never thinked about that, but I think we already seen it, in Submachine: 32 chambers.Babylon wrote:I find both creepy in different ways, Sub 4 and Sub 2.

@Sublevel: When I went to another layer, I feel that I'm not was in home, like if I went to some unknown place of what you don't know anything, looking at the stuff there is, and never knew they porpuses or something except that they are part of the plan. How small I feel when I played Sub8.
BTW: How many times we had, in the history of the forum, this discussion with Sublevel saying that original Submachines are better? I think we have already a lot of these, and I'm getting bored.
