That's what I think, that it's floating inside the void like many other locations we see.

Unrelated, but now that I think, could it be that the Sub1 exit painting we see was actually a real place, before it got buried by sand? I say that because we can see the silhouette of the Lighthouse in one of the paintings. Mateusz said in a forum post that the sand was poured from another layer. Maybe the Lighthouse actually served as a lighthouse, near the sea and everything, before all that sand got poured over the place creating a desert?!

Actually, where the void located? The Core and the first submachine was created underground(like the winter palace, the root and ancient section), but where most of locations of the Outer Rim are located? Such as basement and edge. And when submachine "absorb" locations, can it teleport them to own dimension? Or locations like radio lab(277), pi room(314), 355, 378, etc. are self-created by submachine? Or are they floating in the void in separate pocket dimension(like it we saw in 277), or underground? Where the self-created locations are situated?

I think the Core could have been above ground originally, and been absorbed after the first submachines were created.

About the outer rim locations, we've seen both absorbed and self-created locations. I think the void is likely to be a pocket dimension, that is underground but has different physics, like no gravity, such that locations can float. But I'm not sure.

Yeah. Considering that is what the lab was exploring (or at least all locations they were dealing with seem to have been in the void), it seems like a fair assumption to say that the Outer Rim has the void in it. Outer Rim being a mass of anomalously expanded Submachine and space... right?

Right. On the other hand, some of the places near the knot (Sub8 and Sub9) have visible skies. I don't know how to reconcile it with the fact that Submachine seems to be underground. Either not all of it is underground, or the void/pocket dimension has grown enough to hold stars inside :?

I think subnet expansion mechanism works in 2 ways(it's obviously):
1) adoption with two steps - submachine "adopts" any locations from our world, such as Maya temple from sub32. Then submachine can absorb this location into the separate pocket dimension, which is just empty space with different physics(like virtual reality... IRL). But how absorption mechanism is working I don't know. I mean if submachine can adopt every location and it randomly "crawls" for example, cabin in the forest, then it can absorb it in own dimension - what will remain in the cabin's place? Or submachine "backups" the location and teleport the copy to the void? I separate these ideas because there are adopted, but not absorbed locations, like the ship(800) or tomb(043).
2) creation - submachine creates locations, such as basement, the edge and so on. Another question: how many subnet locations are created by the submachine? I think about 277(radio lab), 355, all "cube" locations and so on.
Now I just want to know how adoption mechanism of the subnet is actually working.

There are a few theories in the wiki about how Submachine absorbs locations, but we don't know for sure, it hasn't been clarified much in the games. All we have is a few forum posts from Mateusz that gave some hints.

They're a lot, the defense systems, probably the loop, we even have one in process of creation (672).

Anyway, I'll create my own expansion theory. I think this topic is very interesting.

Yes, there are many locations created by submachine, but there is one more thing that I didn't get: What actually is "man-made submachine" means? What is "original" "submachine"? The Core? But what is the Core exactly? Is it something like connected structure of portals existed before creation of the root? Maybe, but it was created by people, wasn't it?

Submachine is underground in at least Layer 1.

Yeah, all of the Basement is certainly created terrain.
