Oh she was pretty serious. This was a lady who lived in a duplex, where an ex of mine lived and she was super religious, ignorant, close minded, feminist, the whole nine yards. This happened back in 2009 when we were together, and she had made that comment, we both looked at her with our mouths gaping open. I honestly was speechless.

A few days later, I brought some ice cream for him, and we ate it in front of her mocking her "Oh yes we love to eat, this ice cream is really delicious" she was royally pissed off, but never said anything to us after that.

Those are some pretty extreme examples. The most homophobic comment I've heard in real life was by this driving tutor lady, who said that she does not understand why gay people would want to get married since the union cannot be sanctioned by God. Otherwise she didn't really seem to have a problem with gay people marrying. I did not really say anything to that.

Then, if I actually were in a public relationship with a guy, then it would probably be a different story...

Congratulations on the ice cream thing though. That was brilliant.

I've seen worse here, like one time in an Islam related talk they said that being gay is like worshiping the devil.
Also Malaysia generally likes to pretend being gay is not a thing.

For an example, in education it is thought that being gay is a choice.
