Bleugh...please help me get something straight in my head! :P
From what I've seen and read from the games and the submachine wiki, the first Submachine was created by a bunch of scientists who created the root. AFAIK, we don't know what happened between then and the collapse which lead to the infestation of submachines at the outer rim. We also don't know how the core was created. People settled the Submachine.
so...did the Submachines exist before the root was made?

Sorry if any of this seems obvious to answer; I'm a tad lost atm. :P
*yawn* bedtime.

The Way I see it, the Scientist were part of a group of people who tried to create it.
But there was already another group of people who lived in the Submachine long before then.
Like Sir Henry O'Toole in 1892.

They didn't have to mimic. They were already living inside the subnet.
The Fourth Dynasty wrote:The Fourth Dynasty at the peak of it's cultural and technological development was able to create first man-made submachine structure. That was around the beginning of twentieth century and is now considered the birthdate of the outer rim. Those first structures were merely flawed copies of the original structures, but in time they grew into something completely autonomous. Attempts to chart new territories failed miserably leaving the vast submachine wilderness to it's own

I don't know, story was meant to build up with time. It was all improvisation. (Except the main structure of the cases).
