Why do you think, that protagonist lost his memory? Especially since they are able to read runes and show knowledge in many aspects of Subworld functioning, such as teleport use and energy (wisdom) gems function in providing energy. I think our "player" is perfectly aware of situation around them, only we (players) can be surprised by subsequent reveals of new universe elements and plot features.

this what I noticed since Submachine 6, when Player first time read runes ("Thoth").
Oh, and before, he said Observation Room was build in 1950s...
That's the time when I started to doubt Player lost his memory.

How does he know so much languages and things?
first time I though he got this knowledge at the Lab before his assignment (lol, his first assignment continues SIX games already! :D), but now it's obviously Player had huge base of knowledge before.
me think

I think protagonist was kind of Murtaugh/Elizabeth/Shiva follower. And one they they found tracks of Mur and being kind of maniac thought they really went back in time, only worried that he's too late to meet Mur. Later they decided to help Mur and recently realised they were only... in a kind of strange museum.

I understand all of that, but Remember The Player is "Us."
Ever since Submachine 1 came out, we did not know anything about the Submachine world.

Moreover, the Runes in my opinion don't count.
There are types of Amnesia where,
Patients can learn new procedural knowledge. In addition, priming (both perceptual and conceptual) can assist amnesiacs in the learning of fresh non-declarative knowledge.Amnesic patients also retain substantial intellectual, linguistic, and social skill despite profound impairments in the ability to recall specific information encountered in prior learning episodes.

So some people with Amnesia can't remember who they are, or where they are, but they can still remember how to read things, and the other such type of devices he knows how to use, they don't count, muscle memory can work in its place.

Plus, we didn't know what half of some of the technological things could do when we each played one of the Submachine games for the first time.
WHERE DO WE COME FROM
WHAT ARE WE
WHERE ARE WE
GOING

I think it's possible that the Player is generic, and is meant to represent actual players of the game like us.

Still we know that there were some other people, that went along the same path. I was buying this whole "there is no protagonist, just player," thing before, but there are at least two counter arguments. One is that in some of the intros and outros, especially in earlier games protagonist is talking to themselves. We even see their legs walking on the seashore and hand in the camera. In Sub8 the protagonist actually thinks if they should put navigator on their head. This suggests they are physical beings. They also have more knowledge than the player, as they can date when rooms in the root were created. It's suggested that they even spent some time training in the lab, reading books, eating and being bored, which is all reserved for actually existing self aware creatures. Maybe it's just Mateusz' idea of what he wants the game and it's plot to be, since we know that at first games were less planed and more improvised and even author didn't know how it will develop.

It can be argued that the protagonist suffers from amnesia. However, amnesia or not, the protagonist does possess a lot of relevant knowledge about the submachine, and thus it is evident that the protagonist has researched beforehand.

And from the last secret in Sub9, it is hinted that the protagonist actually wants to seek the "highest level of understanding." That will also explain why the protagonist actively traced the steps of Murtaugh.

I cannot help but speculate that the protagonist had entered the Subnet of his own will, as some sort of pilgrimage, or perhaps urban exploration.
