Oddly enough, I never paid much attention to that coin, but that you've brought it up, it's odd that it's even ended up in the submachine...
K_Z wrote:but does the civilization in sub8 which worships a god not strike you as a bit too primitive for the 27th century (assuming no apocalypses-like events occurred)? Also, the pyramids and the temple imply a rather ancient culture, including the deity factor, which, again, to me would indicate that it is Mur & Liz who traveled into the past, and we stayed closer to the "present". And, surely, in 1938 they would not get the mummy treatment? (Though, of course, that does not link up well with individuals waiting for Mur to arrive at the Knot. Could there be a timeframe shift for everyone involved within the sub8/9 area that plonked them back into the past?) I do agree though, that we seem to have gone from a "present and in it" into "historical" perspective.
The timeline of the submachine may not correspond with our timeline, which could explain the mummy treatment and several othe rcultural differences.

Also, we can't establish a society as "primitive" because of their architectural style and belief in a religion. After all, we know that they could manipulate karma and I doubt controlling such forced is an easy task. For all we know they could have abandoned technology in favour of karma and the culture could have simply evolved.

If Mur and Liz travelled back in time I can't think of how Mur's destabilisation and stabilisation of the layers would fit in. Also, how would have Liz traveled back in time?

Sub9 kind of destroys our interpretation of the time in which events occurred in the plot.

Maybe, but then there was that note in the secrets...

I posted an alternate possibility earlier:
The Abacus wrote:I interpreted it more as a space/time anomaly that Murtaugh (accidentally?) created. The note mentions that people are still coming through the loop and trying to turn off the defense systems which suggests that people have escaped the loop and re-encountered the events from sub 4-6 with the possibility of events that came before and after as well.

So who were we talking to at the end of sub6?

I believe nobody. That was only time looping in those areas, while in the other subs it ran as it normally would (whatever manner that may be – we don't know). We would not have been talking with Murtaugh, as that would imply that it would have been the same person turning off the defense systems: something that would have probably have been mentioned if that was the case.

This is, of course, one possible interpretation of many, which I may expand upon.
Balance is imperative; without it, total collapse and destruction is imminent.

Finished this in two hours.
Totally blew my mind, with all these new revelations.
Loved the secrets.

...damn, only one left.

I never even really thought about the coin before, but suddenly I'm realizing how strange it is for it to be within the subnet.
I'm pretty sure (and correct me if I'm wrong) that the coin is the only time in the game where an actual Earth location (Europe) is mentioned. (Besides the Kent waterfall, but that could really be anywhere...)
I'm really hoping to find out eventually where submachines actually are in relation to the "real world." There are so many cultural references, and the eurocent coin, proving that there must be some connection to Earth civilizations. But all the statues and references to gods could just be kind of like fragments of Earth cultures that made their way into the subnet somehow. Could that be what the coin is too? Just some Earth artifact that was kind of "swallowed" by the submachine and made its way into the subnet, the same way as all the other cultural references, only this one just happens to mention a location, and is from a later time period (21st century, as opposed to ancient civilizations)?

Personally, I just delight in the support for my theory this brings.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, if the old boss had been an octahedron, which they weren't.

But the discontinuation of mochi is still... an undesireability.

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this along the line, but I just realised that the mummified states of Mur and Elizabeth are the only humans, albeit dead humans in the entire Submachine...
Um...
