sub3 was mainly disliked for the double ending.
sub6... probably due to the lack of items, but that is the thing, each submachine game, different innovation. sub5 had the auto notes system, sub6, one item is all you need. sub7 introduced karma portals, sub8 introduced the layer switcher device, which was tedious at first, but as you got the hang of it... it worked like a charm.
its one thing i like about submachine, each game improves on the other. some games you play out there, you get what you had in the original, no game mechanic changes, just stays the sames, the plot changes, characters change and items change, but the mechanics? same.
submachine raises that bar by changing things up. i think for that reason, its one of the reasons people enjoy it so much.
BTW, Sub6 is hated because of the puzzles, not the items (Said Sublevel).
