You just took a brief glance at the stuff, because there's a lot of stuff.
You can individually examine them if you want too.

That was my impression. Examine the stuff in more detail (if that makes any sense...)

Examine the stuff in more detail
First you take the key/ handle, and see it has a square hole on one side:

The you take a closer look at the note under it:

You open one of the boxes, only to find it's filled with black sand:

You open another box to find a lot of translators:

You open the third and final box in the room and see a strange grey thing wrapped with bubble wrap:

remove bubble wrap to examine "strange grey thing"
You remove the bubble wrap and find that the strange grey thing is in the shape of a tetrahedron, and has lines and circles on it:
